U.S. House Democratic Caucus chair headlines Jefferson-Jackson-Hamer
JACKSON (Sunday, Oct. 29, 2006) U.S. Rep. James E. Clyburn of South Carolina, the third-ranking Democrat in the U.S. House, will headline the Mississippi Democratic Partys Jefferson-Jackson-Hamer Day Dinner.
Clyburn, who would assume the No. 3 House leadership post if Democrats become the majority party on Nov. 7, will give the keynote speech at the 23rd Jefferson-Jackson-Hamer Day Dinner on Saturday, Nov. 18, at the Regency Hotel & Conference Center in Jackson.
Its an honor to have Rep. Clyburn share his observations about whats happening in Washington and what he sees as the future of the Democratic Party, said Wayne Dowdy, chairman of the Mississippi Democratic Party.
Rep. Clyburns visit shows that national party leaders believe in the future of the Mississippi Democratic Party. They recognize the history and potential of our state and our likely gains in the 2007 elections as significant. This shows we are on the right track.
Clyburn has represented South Carolinas 6th Congressional District since 1993 and currently serves as chair of the U.S. House Democratic Caucus. Clyburn has been praised as an unashamed advocate of his constituents by The State, the Columbia, S.C., newspaper.
The Jefferson-Jackson-Hamer Day Dinner is named in honor of former Presidents Thomas Jefferson and Andrew Jackson and civil rights leader Fannie Lou Hamer.
Jefferson is considered founder of the Democratic Party. The party was later reunified under the leadership of Jackson. And Hamer is considered a major icon of the modern-day Mississippi Democratic Party.
The dinner gives the Mississippi Democratic Party a chance to honor and highlight major achievements by state Democrats. Previous keynote speakers at the event have included retired U.S. Army Gen. Wesley Clark, former Virginia Gov. Mark Warner and former Democratic National Committee Chairman Terry McAuliffe.
Besides Clyburns speech, Mississippi Democrats also will honor former Gov. William Winter for, among other things, his unending commitment to the Democratic Party as well as his contributions and work to improve public education in Mississippi.
Regular tickets to the Jefferson-Jackson-Hamer Day Dinner are $100 a person in advance or $1,000 for a table of 10. Members of the Yellow Dog Democrats and Young Democrats can buy tickets at a special discounted price of $50 each.
Tickets can be purchased or reserved in advance by calling the Mississippi Democratic Party headquarters in Jackson at (601) 969-2913. You also can mail your payment to the Jefferson-Jackson-Hamer Day Committee, P.O. Box 1583, Jackson, MS 39215.
This is a chance to celebrate the values and beliefs of the Mississippi Democratic Party while also looking ahead to an important state election next year, Dowdy said. Its great to be a Democrat. And we are on the verge of making great moves.
